COVID-19 | Oral Health Tips

How to take care of your teeth during COVID-19 and prevent a dental emergency.

As the office is closed and ordered to see only emergencies during this time. It is most important to take care of your dental health during this time.

Here are some oral healthcare tips to follow:

1. Maintain an excellent oral hygiene regime

Make sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day. It’s easy to loose the routine and track of time (and date :) these days.
TIPS:

  • Try setting a timer to remind yourself to brush first thing in the morning and before bed.
  • Electric toothbrushes have built in two minute timers. If you’re using a manual toothbrush, set a timer to ensure you're brushing for the optimal amount of time (two minute hour glasses are fun)

2. Replace your toothbrush regularly

It is recommended that you replace your toothbrush every 2-3 months. This is also important to replace after you have been sick or when the brushes are looking worn or bent.

3. Use fluoridated toothpaste

Fluoride used topically on the teeth will help strengthen the enamel and makes the teeth more resistant to tooth decay.

4. Avoid snacking on sugary foods and stay hydrated

Our teeth are attacked by acid after every snack/meal for 40 minutes. This puts your teeth at a high risk for dental decay and will cause sensitivity. Try snacking on those sweets with a meal or drink lots of water immediately after snacking.

5. RINSE and GARGLE

This is a crucial time to reduce the bacterial and viral loads. Try to not only rinse but GARGLE with a hydrogen peroxide rinse (alternatively use salt water or a store bought mouth rinse). This could kill viruses such as COVID-19 which have been shown to live in a mouth and throat (oropharynx).
